ABOUT JESS
How many times have you gotten an invite to a networking event for your business? How many times have you looked it and just tossed it aside? I know I have done it a few times. Networking events happen all year around, either in person or as an online event. As business owners we sometimes look at these events and think that they will be a waste of time. A bunch of people just trying to sell their own products or services? This isn’t actually the case though. Attending these events is actually really important for your business. They can create so many opportunities and growth for your business. Networking events – why are they important for your business?
Gives you a chance to tell your story
When a person looks at your business, they just see the front of it. When you attend networking events you are able to talk about your business, what made you start it and what your visions for it are. Being around like minded people in business can help you to not only tell your story but to refine it as well. By listening to the experiences of others you can see what does and doesn’t work and alter your approach moving forward.
You can talk about your vision, values and what makes you different from all the rest.

Build relationships
The main reason you attend a networking event is to network with other business owners. It is a chance to get to know others in your area either in your industry or in others. You can build relationships with these business owners and work together to grow your businesses. You may have some ideas that will work within their businesses and they might have some that will benefit you and your business. Building these relationships is important to help you not only succeed in business, but also to help you feel more in control and understood within the industry. Although those at the event may be direct competition to your business, building relationships with them can actually work in your favour and theirs. Collaborations, ideas and joint ventures are just a few of the ways you can work together and grow.
Even if you do not create close relationships, it is still a way to make connections with other businesses. From there you can refer people to them and have them do the same. By referring people to these connections, it increases your chances of them doing the same.
Learn and teach
Even if you have been in business for many years, there is always something new to learn. By attending networking events you are given the opportunity to learn new things and also have the opportunity to pass on some of the knowledge that you have learned along the way. By sharing this knowledge you are not only getting a chance to learn new things yourself, but it also shows a professional and approachable side of you. People are more likely to refer customers to you if they trust you and your vision. If you are open and approachable with them, they are likely to tell others.

It helps you push pass your boundaries
Being a business owner is a scary thing at times. Walking into a room of other business owners might seem daunting and not something you want to do. However once you do, it will help you to push past the concerns and hesitations that you have in business. It can help you to push your boundaries and force you to get you and your business out there.
Getting ready for a networking event might not seem like your ideal afternoon. However trust me when I say it will be worth it. Research the event, see if there are like minded people that will be attending and get out there and show them who you are.
