Why do I need to index my website?
The short answer is, so it will be seen! Once you have indexed your site and the individual pages Google will be able to find your website easier. This means that when people are searching for different keywords and search terms that relate to your business, your website will show up.
By indexing the website it helps boost the organic search results and provide you with an increased chance of being seen.
Google has its own ‘spiders’ that crawl through the web and pull content from websites all over the web. This information is all kept in Googles index and is used to direct people to where they need to go when they search a certain term. If your website is not indexed, the spiders wont find you.

How do I use Google Console to index my site?
Google Search Console is one of the most valuable SEO tools at your disposal. And the best part? It is completely free to use.
Google Search Console has many features that you can use to track your website and various things within it. When it comes to indexation you can use it to track the crawling of your website, any errors that might be showing up and if there are any security breaches.
The first step is to create an account (if you don’t already have one). If you have a Google account, you can use this to log in.
Once you’ve created an account, click the “Add a Property” button in the top right corner. Add your domain name in (website address) and then click “Add”
You will then be requested to verify your site, to confirm you actually own the site and have permission to access. Once verified you will be able to view your search console date.
Things to do in the console
Once you are in the console, it is time to start updating and getting your indexing right. A few things you should take care of straight away include:
- Setting your preferred domain. Make sure once you set the preferred domain you then go in and add any additional variations that people may search. This can include using your domain name with and without the WWW at the start.
- Check your index status. This will show you which pages of your website that Google has indexed in the past year. In this section you will be able to see if any of your pages have missed being indexed and then go in and fix them up.
- Crawl Status. Under the crawl status tab you can have a look at what crawling has been done of your website, any errors that are showing and what hasn’t been crawled. You can then make changes, edit links and get your website closer to being crawled again.

It is important to check in the Search Console regularly to see what is happening. If Google has been crawling your website at a consistent speed than this is a good sign. However if there has been a drop in the crawling or there are parts of your website being missed than there is a good chance that something is being blocked. You need to determine what that is and get it fixed asap.
Indexing means you will be seen. Take the time to set t up properly from the start and give your website the best chance.
