Jess here!

Let’s talk about blog writing. It can be a bit daunting when you realise the components to a blog and how to structure them to have maximise impact and a positive return on investment.

What is the purpose of a blog?

Writing blogs can have multiple purposes such as driving traffic to your website and demonstrating your expertise in a particular topic or category.

It is tempting to use a blog as a personal journal but there is a way to share your experience in a structured way to get the best results out of your blog.

They were like a diary entry…

I would pour my heart, soul and person opinions into these blogs but it wouldn’t achieve anything… no traffic, no new clients and I have worked out why.
It is important that you have strong keywords and that you research the best ones for your business.
It is more than just picking a few words and throwing them in.
You need to research what it is that your ideal client is searching for. What do they want to know and what are the exact words they are using to find it?

How many words should a blog be?

How long is a piece of string?
I have done a fair bit of research on this and the minimum is 500 words but the optimum length of a blog for the SEO experts is 2200 words.

This length is to include keywords to ensure you appear in google and rank as high as possible.

The important part is the value you are giving someone in a blog. Are you giving a step by step guide to a task such as how to reconcile in Xero as an example.

How do I find keywords for my blog?

Some keywords or key phrases are VERY competitive, and you may need to strategise a different angle to get search result in this area.
It can be a tedious task but it is extremely important and will determine your success!
An easy way to find alternate keywords is by going to google and starting to type words that relate to your offering.
You will see a list of things people have searched that include those words.
This gives you an ideal of what is being used by potential customers when they are searching.
Here are some of the ways we research keywords and find out what people are searching for:
Ubersuggest

Ubersuggest is a tool that can help you to find the best keywords for your website and content writing.
Ubersuggest helps you generate keywords for your website content and allows you to see how you are ranking vs your competition.
With Ubersuggest’s free keyword tool, you can generate an unlimited number of suggestions for free. This helps you to bring your content to the next level and help you to dominate the search engines.
Neil Patel is the “go to guy” in SEO and has amazing FREE SEO training.
Whilst it is great to write about your experience, if your blog is like your high school diary, it is likely no one will read it.
The reason is because it won’t include the phrases that people are looking for!

Answer The Public
Answer the Public is another great tool that I use with my content creation ideas.
You know when you type into the google search box and there are automatic search terms that appear?
Answer the public draws that information and provides it to you in a chart that is simple to interpret and understand.
Don’t let the creepy guy put you off!
This tool shows what your ideal client is searching for in the form of questions.
This is a great way to plan a blog article and provide value to your audience because you are giving them exactly what you are searching for!
A great feature of this tool is you can export the answers into a CSV – Microsoft Excel file to refer to later down the track.
There is also a paid plan that you can sign up to which gives you the chance to monitor for new ways that people talk & ask questions about your brand, product or topic.
These two tools take out the guessing and provide you with a powerful system to give information to your customers and drive THE RIGHT traffic to your website!

Search on the platform

If you are targeting a specific platform i.e. Pinterest, then I would highly recommend searching in the search box to see what comes up as you did in google.

I know it sounds crazy!

Each platform has a purpose and a different target audience which will determine how they search for things.
Would your mum or dad use the same search words as your 20 year old niece or nephew?
This is where knowing your target marketing is important because how they communicate will impact how they find you!

How to give value and write engaging content?

So you get them to your page by using keywords and phrases but how do you keep them there?

Understanding your industry and what the topic is that you are writing about you can approach it a few different ways:

  • Ask a question
  • Show results by providing the data
  • Make a comparison
  • Identify a debate
  • Clearly explain a situation
  • Describe the current problem
  • Quote an expert or authority
  • Cite a typical example

What is a call to action?

A call to action is when you make an offer or asking someone to take an action at the end of your article. The concept and goal is that you have given so much value and information that the reader want to take it further and work with you.

By giving this information, you share your expertise and build your credibility allowing you to stand out in the crowd of the competition.

I know it is so much more involved than you realise but it is the key to success when you are driving traffic to your website and giving valuable content.

I’m so excited for you to get a piece of this magic and start making the same impact on your clients too.

So check out the next few blog posts so I can tell you more.
