Setting up a website for your business is a step in the right direction. These days when someone is looking for a business, the first place they tend to go is Google. If you do not have a website, you are missing a lot of potential customers. Once you have decided that you want (or need) a website for your business, the next step is deciding which platform to go with. There are a number of different platforms you can build your website on. Each of them have their own functionalities and benefits. Today we are going to compare two of the popular platforms. WordPress and Wix.

What are the differences between them?

Wix is a simple to use, all in one website builder. It is however very basic, so if you are needing to add complex applications or coding to your website, this may not be possible through the platform. Wix is a hosted platform meaning all hosting is through Wix and you can not choose your own host.

Because of the simplicity of Wix, it is very easy to create your website yourself without much technical know-how.

The options for SEO and marketing through your website are limited with Wix, however it can still be done. The basic programing will still give you different options and ways to increase the traffic to your site, however if you are wanting to use third party applications to boost it, they are not all compatible with Wix.

WordPress is a self-hosted open source platform. This means that you can build your website from scratch and exactly how you want it to be built. Self-hosted websites mean you choose your own host and all access and ownership belongs to you.

WordPress comes with a lot more functionality which also means that you require a higher level of technical know-how. You can create your website with the premade templates or you can use coding to create a design like no other.

WordPress gives you an in-depth way to optimize your website and get it higher on search pages. There are many applications and plugins that you can add to your website to help you with SEO, security and payment options through the site.

There are thousands of themes and templates available through the library to help you design your website. There are both free and paid options to choose from.

If you are looking to create a complex website that requires different features, plugins and interfaces than WordPress is the best option for you. Even for simple websites that are not complex, WordPress is still the leading platform.

Which platform should I use?                  

Personal preference still does play a part in deciding which platform to use. If you are looking to edit and change your website yourself and do not have a lot of knowledge than it may be best to go with a simpler platform such as Wix.

However if you are up for the challenge or are looking to have someone else manage your website, than WordPress is hard to pass by. It is a superior platform and is the leading platform on the market. This means that out of all the platforms on the market, the most people are using WordPress.
