Jess here!

Are you on Instagram? Whether you have a personal or business account (or both) you will probably have noticed that there are some really pretty and well presented accounts on there. The accounts that have a clear theme, that use the same colours and stick to the same types of images. This is what we would call a grid theme. By using a grid theme, they are able to engage with their followers with the look of their posts, before people even read the content. Having a theme on your Instagram is important for engagement and interaction. People are more likely to look at and read the accounts that are visually appealing to them. But how do you work out your theme?

Start with your branding

The first thing you should look at when it comes to creating your Instagram feed is to look at the branding you already have. Your logo, the colours you use within your business and what people see when they look at your business. Once you have determined your branding, you should then be using these colours and themes within your Instagram. Having a united theme across all aspects of your business will help you to show professionalism to those who follow you.

Set your image guidelines

Once you have your branding, it is then time to start looking at the images you are going to share. It is important that once you choose your images types that you stick to them and not throw random images in that will then interfere with the look you are going for. Deciding your own guidelines will help keep you accountable and in control when you decide to post.

Some examples of types of guidelines you can set for yourself can include:

  • The lighting and quality of the images. Setting yourself a guideline that they need to be well lit images can help you to not impulsively upload a poor quality image.
  • The types of backgrounds your images will have. Whether you want to put a border around your images or if they will all have your logo on them before uploading them.
  • The font (and colour) that needs to be used if you are writing over the image.
  • Whether you are going to follow a grid template that incorporates each image to create one larger image.

Your guidelines are there for you to help keep your feed the way you want it to look.

Finding your images

If you are not taking your own photos to upload, you need to look at where you are going to source your images from. There are a number of different websites that you can use for stock photos. Some of these are free, meaning anyone can access the images or you can pay and purchase your own images from a paid stock image site. Sites such as Canva give you the ability to access stock images and edit them all in the one place. This means if you want to add your logo or text over the image you can do this easily and then download it ready for use.

Have an order in mind

Rather than sending out 5 images in a row all on the same topic, it is a good idea to mix it up.

Still using your colours and the grid theme you have put in place, you can still share different ideas, product releases and blogs.

Take a look at the theme that you have put in place and how you want it to work. Then incorporate an order for your posts so that you are sharing each different part of your business, in a particular order.

By doing this, you are not only getting across everything you want to, but are also doing it in a visually appealing way that will have people wanting to come back the next day to see what you have to share.

Balance your posts

There is more to creating a visually appealing feed than just choosing a few colours that go well together. You need to look at the overall picture and make sure that it all balances well.

You need to look at the colours you are using, the different shapes that you incorporate into your posts and the font that you are using.

All these things on their own may look great, but when you put them together – are you still getting the same look that you want to achieve.

Balance is important. If your feed is unbalanced it can loose the wow factor and not be appealing to your followers.
